When Emotions Run the Show
Have you ever felt like your emotions were running the show? Leaving you exhausted, reactive, or just overwhelmed?
Maybe you snapped at someone you love, or shut down completely after a stressful day.
If that feels familiar—you’re not alone, and it’s not your fault.
As Black women and women of color, we often navigate spaces that don’t see or support us fully. Add life’s daily chaos, and emotional regulation can feel impossible.
But here’s the truth: You are not your emotions. You have the power to choose how you respond—and mindfulness is the bridge to that choice.
What Is Emotional Regulation?
Emotional regulation isn’t about bottling things up or pretending you’re fine.
It’s about noticing your emotions, pausing, and choosing how to respond—so your feelings serve you instead of controlling you.
For example:
Instead of snapping back in anger, you pause and choose calmer words.
Instead of shutting down, you allow yourself to feel what you need, then recenter.
Mindfulness is the tool that helps you do this. Like a muscle, it gets stronger with practice.
Why It Matters
Many of us were raised to “be strong” no matter what. But that expectation is heavy—and unrealistic.
Emotional regulation is about protecting your inner peace, even when the world demands more than you can give.
✅ At home: Showing up with more patience and presence.
✅ At work: Responding with clarity instead of chaos.
✅ For yourself: Honoring your emotions without letting them derail you.
Simple Ways to Start
✨ Pause Before Reacting: Take three deep breaths before you respond.✨ Name Your Feelings: Saying “I feel frustrated” or “I feel overwhelmed” can help release tension.✨ Release Guilt: Feeling isn’t failing. Give yourself permission to feel without judgment.
