Finding Peace and Joy This Holiday Season

ree

The holiday season is here, bringing with it twinkling lights, festive gatherings, and for some, a chance to exhale after a long year. But let’s be honest—this time of year can also feel heavy. It’s a season that comes with layers.

For some, Christmas and the holidays mean joy, laughter, and togetherness. It’s the culmination of the warmth we’ve been working toward all year. But for others, it’s a stark reminder of what’s missing—a loved one who isn’t here, a family that’s estranged, or a life that feels lonelier than it should. If you’re feeling a mix of emotions today, know that you are not alone.

My Holiday Reflection

For me, the holiday season hasn’t always been merry and bright. After losing my husband, Luther, in late November 2010, the holiday cheer felt like a weight I couldn’t fully carry. Grief painted the season in muted grays for years. But over time—through reflection, mindfulness, and a decision to embrace small joys—the fog began to lift.

Now, I hold space for both the nostalgia and the hope. Christmas has become a time of remembrance, while also celebrating what is still beautiful in my life today. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine, and I honor that journey.

The Holidays Can Be Complicated

If this season feels hard for you, I want to validate that. Maybe you’re missing someone who brought light into your world, or you’re in a season of transition where everything feels unsteady. Maybe you’re longing for connection or grieving a relationship that has ended. Or perhaps you’re working hard to make this the best holiday you’ve had in years and you’re feeling the pressure to hold it all together.

Whatever your experience, I see you. I honor your feelings. And I want to offer you something small but meaningful: mindfulness.

Using Mindfulness to Navigate the Holidays

Mindfulness isn’t about fixing or erasing your feelings. It’s about being present, grounding yourself in the moment, and creating space to feel, heal, and embrace joy where it exists. Here are a few mindfulness practices that can help, no matter where you find yourself today:

For Those of us Who Are Struggling

  1. Ground Yourself in the Present Moment:

    • Take five deep breaths, inhaling for four counts and exhaling for six. Feel the rhythm of your breath and remind yourself: “I am here, and I am safe.”

  2. Gratitude in Small Things:

    • Write down three things that brought you comfort today—a warm cup of tea, a favorite song, or even the fact that you woke up this morning.

  3. Connect with Memory:

    • If you’re grieving, light a candle for your loved one or write them a letter. This can create a space for connection while honoring your feelings.

For Those Who Are Feeling Good

  1. Savor the Joy:

    • Pause during moments of happiness and name what you’re feeling. Say to yourself: “This is joy,” “This is laughter,” or “This is peace.” Let those moments anchor you.

  2. Balance Your Energy:

    • The holidays can be overwhelming. Take breaks when needed. A 10-minute walk outside or a moment of quiet can help you recharge and stay present.

  3. Spread the Cheer:

    • Share your joy with someone else—a kind word, a thoughtful message, or a simple smile can brighten someone’s day.

Actionable Steps for Mindfulness Today

Whether today is your best Christmas yet or one filled with quiet reflection, here are a few ways to integrate mindfulness into your holiday:

  1. Morning Reflection:

    • Start your day with a moment of gratitude. Reflect on what this day means to you and set an intention for how you want to experience it.

  2. Mindful Eating:

    • As you enjoy your holiday meal, take a moment to truly savor the flavors. Notice the textures, smells, and tastes, and appreciate the nourishment it provides.

  3. Evening Wind-Down:

    • Before bed, write down one moment from the day that you want to remember. This can help you carry the positive energy forward into the new year.

Encouragement for Today

No matter where you are emotionally this Christmas, you’ve made it here. That in itself is a victory. You’ve shown resilience, grace, and courage just by continuing to move forward.

I encourage you to embrace today for what it is—a chance to reflect, to feel, and to grow. Whether you’re holding space for grief, celebrating small joys, or leaning fully into the holiday cheer, this day is yours to shape in the way that feels best for you.
